When we're children we love being able to look at picture books and to be read to. Many children have wonderful memories of their parents or caretakers reading stories to them about dragons or princesses. When we get older, books become a way to escape from the world, as well as to teach us about the things around us. Books are extremely important in the world, and the world was almost bereft of one type of book – books by black authors.
For a very long time, black authors were ignored simply because black people were thought to be less intelligent than their white counterparts. Fortunately, in the 1920's, the Harlem Renaissance taught the world all about how amazing African American fiction authors and other African American artists could be. With the Harlem Renaissance came the attention that black authors had been looking for, allowing their stories to be read in classrooms and to be enjoyed by people around the world.
The Digital Age
One of the greatest things about the digital age is that now everything is available within easy reach, especially if you know where to look. Instead of having to wait for a book by an African American writer to arrive at your home, you can buy an ebook. It's easy to find an ebook for sale by a black author because there are a great number available to purchase.
Thanks to ebooks, it is also easy for current black authors to be able to publish their work for the world to see. Because of the swiftness of technology, it's possible to create ebooks now much faster than creating and publishing a book has ever been.
While there are amazing historical works by black authors available to purchase online, and while you can also find free ebooks online as well, one thing to look out for are the ebooks that are written by up and coming African American authors, as these are the books that will eventually become ones that are pieces of history.
